Frequently Asked Questions

Here’s some common questions and answers about the different healing systems I use in a Lightworks Session:

WhAT COMPLIMENTARY HEALING SYSTEM ARE USING?

WHAT IS REFLEXOLOGY:

Reflexology is an ancient healing art that teaches that every part of our body has a connection to our feet. It can help you find balance in your body, mind, and spirit by manipulating your feet. Below is a common reflexology chart that shows where the various parts of the body connect to the feet.

WHAT IS REIKI?

Reiki is the life energy that flows through all living things. It is a spiritual healing art with its roots in Japanese origin. The word Reiki comes from the Japanese word (Rei) which means “Universal Life” and (Ki) which means “Energy.’’ A Reiki session can help ease tension and stress and can help support the body to facilitate an environment for healing on all levels – physical, mental, and emotional.

WHAT IS HOMEOPATHY?

Homeopathy is a medical system based on the belief that the body can cure itself. Those who practice it use tiny amounts of natural substances, like plants and minerals. Practitoners believe these minute amounts of natural substances inoculate the body and stimulate the healing process. A basic belief behind homeopathy is “like cures like.” In other words, something that brings on symptoms in a healthy person can -- in a very small dose -- treat an illness with similar symptoms. It was developed in the late 1700s in Germany, but there are many examples in Asian countries where homeopathy was actually used much earlier than in Europe. It’s still very common in many European countries, but it’s not quite as popular in the United States.

WHAT IS AYURVEDA?

Ayurveda is a traditional Indian system of medicine that aims to maintain health and prevent disease by restoring balance in the body, mind, and spirit. It is based on the belief that the universe and the human body are composed of five elements (earth, water, fire, air, and space) and three doshas (energies) known as Vata, Pitta, and Kapha. Ayurveda uses a holistic approach that includes diet, herbs, lifestyle modifications, and therapies such as massage and yoga. It first began in India over 3000 years ago.

WHAT IS FAR- INFRARED AND STEAM SAUNA THERAPY?

Sauna therapy is exposing your body to high heat in an enclosed space for health purposes. The resulting elevation in core body temperature — hyperthermia — may improve your health. Recent research suggests saunas can induce positive changes in human metabolism and can have a regulating effect on the immune system and nervous system. Natural stressors, like cold or heat exposure — called “hormetic stress” — mimic the natural stressors our human ancestors were often exposed to. A systematic review reported that the health benefits of regular sauna use likely comes from the biochemical cascade caused by healthy heat stress. The heat stress caused by sauna therapy can help by:

  • improving cardiovascular health from issues such as heart disease,

  • assist in stress reduction,

  • transform metabolic markers,

  • increase fat burning and weight loss, increase antioxidant production,

  • improve insulin resistance and blood sugar, autoimmune conditions,

  • athletic performance and recovery, and mental health issues,

  • support healthy detoxification of chemicals,

  • assist in reductions of psychiatric medications, and many other conditions.

WHAT IS GUA SHA?

Gua sha, or kerokan (in Indonesia), is a traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) practice in which a tool is used to scrape people's skin in order to produce light petechiae. Practitioners believe that gua sha releases heat and unhealthy bodily matter from blood stasis within sore, tired, stiff, or injured muscle areas to stimulate new oxygenated blood flow to the areas, thus promoting healing and recovery.

WHAT IS TUI NA?

Tui na is a Chinese massage technique that involves kneading, pressing, rolling, shaking, and stretching the body. It improves circulation, regulates vital energy, and relieves pain. Tui na can help with irritable bowel syndrome, constipation, diarrhea, acid reflux, chronic pain, neck pain, shoulder pain, back pain, sciatica, and tennis elbow. It helps with stress-related disorders affecting the digestive or respiratory system by using techniques to restore the balance of Qi in the body.

  • Tui na uses rhythmic compression to enhance Qi and blood flow.

  • Tui na uses passive and active range of motion and traction techniques.

  • A therapist will assess your posture and palpate for tender tissues, trigger points, and contracted muscles.

  • The therapist will apply pressure to specific points, or acu-points.

  • The therapist may use cupping.

ARE COMPLIMENTARY HEALING MODALITIES RIGHT for me?

Complimentary healing modalities can be good for everyone. My passion is finding integrative solutions for people for whom Western medicine has few or limited answers. Here are some of the things I specialize in helping with:

My integrative approach to healing works with Western medicine, not as a replacement for its solutions. I would not be here without it.

What is Reflexology?

Reflexology is an ancient healing art that teaches the concept of ‘as above, so below’ in regards to the human body. It was rediscovered in the west by Eunice Ingham as an ear, nose, and throat doctor during the 20th century. In reflexology, every part of your body connects to the feet through zones also known as meridians in Chinese medicine. By manipulating specific parts of your feet, I can help healing happen in your entire body. For more click here: Reflexology, The Ancient Healing Art »

What Should I Expect?

As I work through the various organ systems through touching your feet, you should expect to feel a wide variety of sensation depending on the level of health and toxicity within that area of the body that correlates with the pertinent zone on the foot. At times there will be varying levels of discomfort as we work out the issues through your feet. Healing reactions are commonplace as your system learns to rebalance itself, and it is here that I will suggest functional complementary modalities to best support you on your healing journey to health.
